Look at spending for measure of equality

The professor gets a C. And thats only because Im a soft grader. Im talking about Steve Haycoxs recent column on income inequality and capitalism (Inequalitys roots deep in US history, May 4).

I took the History of Alaska class from the professor a while back. He does a terrific job when sticking within his field of expertise. But as most college students know, professors often indulge themselves and lose their judgment when they go off on a political rant.

Professor Haycox is correct. Income inequality in the United States is historically high. It is hard to argue otherwise. But thats not the important part of the story. Our standard of living is way above...

FARMINGTON — A local group of animal rights activists is calling for a boycott of Lagoon until the amusement park stops what the group calls the imprisonment of animals.

The group, which organized under the banner name of Lagoonsucks.com, alleges Lagoon has failed to meet minimal federal standards for the care of animals that make up the amusement parks Wild Kingdom.

The allegations include providing poor veterinary care, filthy enclosures, inadequately trained employees and too little space, according to Jordan Kasteler. He said the company failed to meet minimal federal standards for the care of animals used in exhibition as established in the Animal Welfare Act. He also...

Business Lending Losses Bring Down Telesis

Over the past few years, Telesis made loan workout attempts to avoid placing properties in foreclosures and sued others that had defaulted.

Stage’s "Brothers Size" Will Play in South Africa

Syracuse Stage ends its eclectic 2011-12 season with a strikingly interesting offering from the pen of a young, award-winning playwright named Tarell Alvin McCraney titled The Brothers Size. Stages Producing Artistic Director, Timothy Bond, directs the production.

This mythic, yet gutsy play about filial love and responsibility is part of McCraneys trilogy called The Brother/Sister Plays. Its companion pieces are titled In the Red and Brown Water and Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet. However, my sources tell me that, despite the fact that they share the theme of familial relationships, each is a stand alone piece with no direct narrative connection among them.

Aside from the plays...

Amusement Musings: Discovering neutral ground at Six Flags

EDITORS NOTE: Welcome to the first of many guest columns highlighting theme park memories. This column started out as Retro Orlando by Audrey Brown, but weve renamed it and expanded it to include theme park and attraction memories outside the Orlando area. This first Amusement Musings is by Audreys sister and her experiences with little Audrey (pictured above, at right) at Six Flags St. Louis in 1987.
